After traveling to natural “blue zones” and many more health and wellness destinations around the world, there’s something that stands out.
A natural “blue zone” is a region on our beautiful planet where the people living there naturally live healthier lives, longer. While there are currently just five “blue zone” destinations that have been well publicized, we have found many more health and wellness hubs.
And what stands out is not only do the people in these naturally slim, naturally healthy, naturally happy areas live a stress-free lifestyle. They also live far more nature-aligned lives than many of us do. Especially if you live in a big city.
Why Dietary Supplements?
Dietary supplements are an easy way we have found to incorporate many of the healing herbs and spices that people who liver longer use. And not only do these diet changes help you live longer, they also help you live better more alive years.
The peoples of places like Okinawa in Japan, Sardinia in Italy and of course our much-loved Nicoya Peninsula here in Costa Rica. Live lives that not only help them live far longer than many other places, yet also enjoy healthier body’s and happier states of mind — right now.
And for us that’s what it’s all about.
Living longer lives, in healthier body’s and with happier states of mind.
We believe the first step to realign back to our natural state, is weight loss. Until you have lost the excess weight, cleansed and renewed, it can be very hard to enjoy these benefits.
And living longer, happier and healthier lives is not just reserved for those fortunate to live in a natural Blue Zone. Although it can certainly help to visit one and experience the culture that these health benefits have come from!
We believe that everyone can experience these benefits even if you do live in a big city or have stress in your life. In fact, it’s even more important when that is the case!
How do we use Dietary Supplements?
We don’t believe in dietary supplements replacing real food, — rather supplementing it and enhancing benefits with hard to find herbs and spices.
Turmeric is a dietary staple in the Blue Zone region of Okinawa in Japan, where they have used it for millenia for it’s taste and health benefits. As well as many other herbal systems from the Ayurvedic medicine from India to the Jamu tradition in Indonesia.
We believe in supplementing with many of these herbs and spices for the simple reason of convenience as many of our clients live busy, full lives. At our retreats we serve fresh and traditional recipes using spices like Turmeric, Ginger and Clove. All scientifically shown to bestow so many benefits!
What to expect from Dietary Supplements?
#1: Dietary Supplements Need Not be Your First Choice
First we believe if you can make and use these herbs and spices fresh in their whole forms, then this is the best way to make the most of them. For example while Curcumin is generally accepted as being the ingredient in Turmeric that delivers the powerful anti-inflammatory and many more benefits. There are also studies that show Turmeric consumed in it’s whole form works best.
And so if you can buy some ginger or raw Turmeric at the grocery or health food store, blend it up at home with some Kale, Broccoli, a little Coconut Oil and some Clove, then that likely works best.
However being consistent with your herbal supplementation is key. That’s why I know when I am busy and have meetings to attend or am running around the city getting things done, I always rely on my herbal nutrition supplement to see me through.
They are not my first choice. I would of course prefer to drink a freshly blended smoothie from the raw whole organic source. However high quality organic supplements definitely give me the focus and quality of experience I am used to from drinking a smoothie or eating a raw food meal.
They work great and are super convenient!
#2: Dietary Supplements Don’t replace a Healthy Lifestyle!
The second thing to remember is that you can’t just take supplements and then use that as an excuse to live an unhealthy lifestyle. Sure they help! Yet if you then go out and pig out on a heavy lunch followed by cheese cake and a snooze, then don’t expect to get the full benefits.
Rather we see supplementation as part of a consistent, healthy lifestyle. The supplement forms of many of these powerful herbs and spices is great for convenience which helps you become consistent.
However there are many more lifestyle factors too!
For example getting a healthy walk in first thing in the morning is something I always try to do. Get outdoors, get some sunshine and fresh air. Sunshine gives you Vitamin D naturally, so you don’t even need to supplement with it!
Getting sunlight everyday is just as important, maybe more important!, than ensuring you are supplementing with all the right dietary supplements. So really try to get outdoors, whether that’s first thing in the morning like I enjoy, or at another time that suits you best.
And while you’re at it. Try a simple walking meditation so you can simply be listening to the sound of your breathing and releasing stress. Meditation is a great stress relief and linked with many health benefits that we have discovered so far.
#3: If you Need Help achieving your Health & Weight Loss goals, just ask.
So many of our clients suffered in silence for years before reaching our for help. Whether it’s because as humans we can sometimes be afraid to ask for help, perhaps it makes us feel weak? Or maybe we are just so rushed for time?
Whatever the answer may be, seeking help on our journey of long lasting health and happiness is important.
I talk to people all the time, other retreat leaders, health and wellness practitioners I know. I do it because talking to someone can really help deal with emotions and the stress of life.
Find someone to talk to close to home. Whether that’s a friend or confidant, or even talking to a licensed counselor near you can be great. Just anything to get your feelings and sometimes mixed up emotions out in the open so change can take place.
Nowadays with all the help and guidance available, we believe everyone living in a first world country like America should have the opportunity to live life in a healthy body, and with a happy stable mind.
